Sophia

Sophia is a 53-year-old single mother of two 14-year-old children, a boy and a girl, living in Georgia. Born in Jamaica, she moved to Florida before eventually relocating to Georgia. Sophia had always been determined to create a better life for her family, but the journey has not been without challenges. After experiencing divorce, she had to transition to a single-income household, which made her decision to return to school even more critical. 

Sophia says, "For the past few years, I felt like my life was a series of challenges and triumphs. I knew that returning to school was a critical step to achieving my goals. As a single parent, I want to provide a better life for my family, and I've always desired to be stable and prosperous to show my children that the future in their life is what they make it." 

Sophia's career journey began in Florida, where she originally enrolled in nursing school. Inspired by her mother, who worked in the healthcare field, Sophia's heart was naturally drawn toward nursing as well as the emotional attachment and support she could provide to those in her care. However, as she progressed in her studies, she realized just how emotionally demanding the profession could be. This led her to explore new passions, eventually guiding her toward teaching and counseling in a school setting. 

While counseling and teaching provided a fulfilling career path, Sophia never let go of her dream to become a nurse. Recently, she felt the pull to complete what she once started, reigniting her passion for healthcare and making the pursuit of a Bachelor's in Nursing at Chamberlain University a top priority. 

As Sophia re-enrolled in Chamberlain University's nursing program, she quickly discovered the financial and personal strain of balancing tuition payments, a mortgage, and the daily responsibilities of raising two teenagers. The challenges of a single-income household weighed heavily on her, and she began searching for additional support. 

That's when she came across H.O.P.E. Inc. and applied for financial assistance. The program's support came at the right time, giving her the cushion she needed to keep pursuing her degree while managing the demands of her household. 

H.O.P.E. Inc. provided Sophia with consistent rental assistance, which helped her stay current on her housing expenses and gave her the ability to cut back on extra work hours. This support meant she could spend more evenings at home with her children, helping with homework, preparing for the next day, and dedicating more time to her studies. 

In addition to housing support, Sophia also received quarterly Kroger grocery and QuikTrip gas cards. These were especially valuable since she often traveled over 50 miles each way for classes and clinicals, and the grocery cards made it easier to keep food on the table while balancing school and family responsibilities. 

H.O.P.E. also stepped in during a particularly difficult time to help with a utility expense of $341, ensuring Sophia could keep her household running smoothly without falling behind. 

Beyond financial assistance, Sophia benefited from monthly budget coaching and financial meetings, which gave her tools to budget, save, and even start thinking about investing — skills that will benefit her long after graduation. H.O.P.E. also extended care to her children, supplying school items and holiday gifts, which reminded Sophia that she was not walking this journey alone. 

On September 29, 2025, Sophia graduated from Chamberlain University with her Bachelor's in Nursing. After years of balancing parenting, work, and education, this milestone represents not only her professional achievement but also the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. 

Reflecting on her journey, Sophia shares, "The HOPE program has been such a blessing to me throughout my nursing journey. The monthly mortgage assistance made it possible for me to stay on top of my housing expenses without the constant stress of working extra hours."
