Let’s face it. The end of the semester can feel like you’re competing in the Olympics. Finals week can be overwhelming for any college student, but for single parents, it comes with extra challenges. Between studying, caring for your child, and maintaining your daily responsibilities, it can feel impossible to keep up. However, with the right strategies, you can successfully navigate and crush finals week without burning out.

1. Plan Ahead and Create a Study Schedule

Waiting until the last minute to study isn’t an option when you have children depending on you. A week or two before finals, create a study plan that breaks down what you need to review each day. Allocate specific time slots for studying, even if it’s just 30 minutes at a time. Once you identify a system that works, you’ll be unstoppable.

2. Use Nap Time and Screen Time Wisely

If your child naps, use that time to power through your most important study tasks. If they’re older, don’t feel guilty about allowing some extra screen time during finals week—sometimes, it’s necessary to get things done.

3. Find a Study Buddy

Studying with a friend, classmate, or fellow single parent can keep you accountable and motivated. Even virtual study sessions via Zoom or FaceTime can be effective. We’re better when we work together so be intentional about creating community among your classmates.

4. Use Online Resources for Quick Review

Short on time? Use YouTube videos, Quizlet flashcards, Tik Tok learning communities, and recorded lectures to review material efficiently. Listening to audio notes while doing chores or driving can also reinforce information. There’s an abundance of resources available. It’s up to you to locate them and use them!

5. Ask for Help and Support

Don’t hesitate to reach out to family, friends, or even your child’s other parent (if possible) for extra support during finals week. If that’s not an option, see if your college offers childcare services or study spaces for student parents. We’re here to offer help at H.O.P.E. Inc. 6. Prioritize Self-Care and Sleep

It’s tempting to pull all-nighters, but sleep is crucial for memory retention and focus. Even short power naps can help boost energy and concentration. Don’t forget to drink water and eat nutritious meals to keep your body and mind functioning well.

7. Stay Positive and Celebrate Your Progress

Finals week is tough, but remember why you started this journey. Celebrate small wins—every completed chapter, quiz, or essay is a step closer to your degree. Your hard work will pay off, and you’re setting an incredible example for your child.
