Danielle, a 31-year-old single mother of three children (ages 10, 7, and 1), resides in Georgia and has dedicated her life to working with children. Driven by her passion for education, she enrolled at Mercer University to pursue a Bachelor of Science in education. However, as a single parent, Danielle faced significant challenges, including a lack of financial support and limited knowledge of budgeting to secure a stable future for her family. She also sought guidance to obtain the credentials necessary to become a certified teacher.
Through her participation in a Helping Mamas event, Danielle was introduced to H.O.P.E. Inc.’s program. This initiative provided her with the financial resources and personal support needed to excel in her studies, complete her degree, and launch her teaching career, while also equipping her with the tools to achieve long-term financial stability.
Background
Danielle has been employed as a paraprofessional at Atlanta Public Schools for three years. While she found fulfillment in her role, she recognized that advancing her career in education and achieving a more stable income required furthering her education and gaining additional knowledge and experience. However, balancing her professional responsibilities with the demands of raising two children and a newborn presented significant challenges. Prior to enrolling in her Bachelor’s degree program at Mercer University, Danielle struggled to cover essential expenses, including supplies for her newborn, rent, gas, and other household costs. These financial pressures made pursuing higher education seem unattainable.
Despite her ability to keep up with bills, Danielle faced ongoing difficulties with budgeting, which trapped her in a cycle of living paycheck to paycheck. As a single mother, the added responsibility of caring for a newborn often left her feeling overwhelmed. Her acceptance into the degree program marked a turning point, not only because of the financial support it provided but also due to the emotional and motivational support she received. “Being a single mom with a newborn often made me feel overwhelmed,” Danielle shares. “When I got accepted into the program, it made me realize how much not only the financial support meant to me but also the check-ins and counseling. Just knowing someone was looking out for me and cheering me on made it motivating to reach the finish line.” This combination of practical and emotional support fueled her determination to complete her degree and achieve her career goals.
Client Situation
Danielle, a dedicated student at Mercer University, was successfully progressing through her Bachelor’s degree program, maintaining strong academic performance. However, as she approached her final two semesters, she encountered significant financial obstacles. Danielle discovered that she had exhausted her available financial aid, leaving her unable to cover tuition and related expenses. With no family support to rely on, she faced the burden of funding her education independently.
Compounding her challenges, Danielle was navigating the aftermath of a divorce, which had left her financially strained and struggling to keep up with bills. The emotional and financial toll of the divorce intensified her stress, making it feel as though “everything was coming down on her shoulders.” Despite her efforts to secure a personal loan to cover the remaining costs of her degree, she was denied, further limiting her options.
Danielle is acutely aware that completing her degree is critical to unlocking better-paying job opportunities that are already lined up, but without immediate financial resources, she risks a delay of up to two years to finish her education. Determined to overcome these barriers, Danielle is seeking solutions to bridge the financial gap and complete her degree on time.

H.O.P.E. Inc. provided Danielle with financial assistance and childcare. However, the support did not stop there. H.O.P.E. also provided things like essentials like diapers, wipes and menstrual items. Also covered summer camp costs for one of her kids. H.O.P.E. also helped when it came to supporting Danielle’s children. During holidays, they would provide gifts off of the children’s wish lists. On May 10, 2025, Danielle graduated from Merce University 10,2025 from Mercer University with my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. “H.O.P.E. Inc. was a vital part in me graduating”.
“Without H.O.P.E., “I would have had to delay my graduation for two years while I saved up enough to finish.”
Testimony
“I was extremely nervous when I first joined the program. In the beginning, I wondered how I could keep up with this. Then, after feeling the support from Ms. Kenita and the entire team taking a chance on me, it gave me even more reasons to keep pushing.” (Danielle, 2025 Graduate)
